Pediatric Dentist First visit in Indianapilis, IN

Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.

You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. Be positive, the less to-do concerning the visit, the better. Refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". Instead tell the child the dentist may "shine your smile," count your teeth or maybe find a pizza chewer. This is a great opportunity to have some fun with your child and start on a positive note.

We invite you to stay with your child during the initial visit. During future appointments, we suggest you allow us to guide your child through their dental experience. Pediatric Dentists have a responsibility to teach and guide your child through their dental experience and how a dental check-up can be fun and rewarding. Our office frequently uses the learning theory of modeling that lets children observe other children getting their teeth cleaned (smile shined) or other easy dental procedures, being careful not to cross sterility barriers. We also believe that letting the children handle the dental instruments(we call it "show-tell-do") along with using kid friendly terms enhances the comfort levels and promotes the learning process. Our behavior guidance program helps develop positive relationships between the child, Dr Poland and our experienced staff. As in a class room, we need the child's attention directed to Dr Poland or a staff member to be successful, however if a parent prefers to accompany the child for their preventive visits, they are always welcome.

Pleasant First Visit

When the child is seen at one year, the first visit can be pleasant and uneventful, introducing the child and parents to the dental office. Emphasis is on the developmental assessment of the child’s oral health. Caries (tooth decay) or developmental disturbances can be managed early.
